2023 Domaine Charles Hours "Juste le Blanc" - Jurançon, France
The southwest of France is a treasure trove of obscure grape varieties, most of which haven't been adopted by wine regions further afield. This bone-dry ripper from the exceedingly picturesque region of Jurançon is a perfect example. Made entirely from the Gros Manseng grape, it's rich, waxy and weighty with floral pear fruit that might all be too much if it weren't for the animated bolt of freshness that keeps it perky and nimble. One taste of this and you'll know why the region has resisted the fashionability of Pinot Grigio, Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay...
Jurançon wine is also beautifully dynamic at the table, and this one is just as happy to echo the heartiness of the leek and butter bean radiatore as it is to provide a pert counterpoint to the lamb pappardelle.
